Data residency

Learn where the resources of your projects and their data are stored, how a project's region is set, and which data leaves the region when you send it out.

Data residency describes where your data is stored and processed. In Bulutistan Cloud, every resource of a project is created and runs in the project's region. Bulutistan Cloud runs in the regions that your platform offers, such as Istanbul 1, which runs in Bulutistan data centers in Türkiye.

This article is about the resources in your projects and the data in them.

Where your resources are

Your resources are in the region of their project. For example:

Every project is provisioned into exactly one region. The project's counterpart in the region's cloud and its quota exist in that region only, and every resource that you create in the project lives there: instances, volumes, snapshots, images, buckets and their objects, networks, and the rest.

Backups follow their volumes. Backup Center uses the backup service of the region's block storage, so a volume's backups are made in the volume's region. Object Storage doesn't replicate buckets to other regions.

For example, the instances and volumes that you create in a project in Istanbul 1 are stored and run in Istanbul 1, whichever subscription the project belongs to.

How a project's region is set

A new project is provisioned into the region of its subscription. You can't change a project's region afterwards. When a product isn't available in a project's region, the console says:

This project's region cannot be changed. To use it, open a project in a region that offers it. Anything you already have in other projects is unaffected.

A create request through the REST API that names a different region from the project's is refused with 422 Unprocessable Entity, the field region, and details.reason set to region_mismatch. Nothing is created. For the region codes and how regions differ, see Regions.

Data that you send out of the region

Some features send data to destinations that you choose. The data then leaves the region:

  • Notifications. Alert and budget notifications go to the email addresses and webhook URLs that you configure. Webhooks are sent only to public https:// addresses. See Send alerts by email and webhook.
  • Exports and downloads. Files that you export or download, such as a page of the Activity Log exported with Export page (CSV), are saved on your device.
  • Public buckets. Objects in a public bucket can be read from the internet. See Bucket visibility and access.
  • Network traffic. Traffic leaves the region when your instances send it to the internet, or to your own network through a Site-to-Site VPN tunnel.

To keep data in Türkiye, use a subscription in a region in Türkiye, such as Istanbul 1, and choose destinations in Türkiye for these features.
