Subscriptions and currency

Understand the subscription as your billing account, choose its currency when you create it, and see how pausing it or moving projects affects billing.

A subscription is your organization's billing account. It sets the currency you're billed in and the region that its projects run in. Every project belongs to exactly one subscription, and the usage of all its projects is billed to it. Your organization can have several subscriptions, for example to be billed in different currencies.

What a subscription holds

Belongs to the subscriptionBelongs to a project
The currency and the regionThe resources you create: instances, volumes, networks, buckets, and so on
Invoices, transactions, credits, commitments, and licensesIts share of the subscription's quotas
The quota limits, shared between its projects

Roles can be granted on a subscription, which covers all its projects, or on a single project. See Tenants, subscriptions, projects, and regions.

Currency

Each subscription is billed in one currency: TRY, USD, or EUR.

  • You choose it when you create the subscription. The subscription that's created when you sign up is billed in USD. See Create a subscription.
  • It can't be changed. To be billed in another currency, create another subscription in that currency.
  • Invoices and transactions use it. The subscription's invoices and transactions are in its currency.
  • Credits must match it. A credit is applied only to invoices in its own currency. See Credits and coupons.
  • Projects move only within it. You can move a project only to another subscription in the same currency. See When a project moves.

The billing account

The billing account page shows the state of a subscription and the totals it's billed for.

In the console, go to BillingSubscriptions. The page lists the resources that are being billed now, with their unit price and their charges so far this month.

Select any row. The billing account of the subscription opens.

FieldWhat it shows
StateActive, or Paused while the subscription is paused.
CurrencyThe subscription's currency.
Billing cycle day1: each billing period is a calendar month.
Month to dateWhat the current month has cost so far.
Projected monthThe month's projected total, compared with last month.
Last monthLast month's total.
OutstandingThe total of the invoices that are unpaid or overdue.
Credit balanceThe credit that's available for your next invoices.

The Invoices tab lists the subscription's invoices. Select PDF on a row to download the invoice as a PDF document. A canceled invoice has no PDF.

Pause and resume a subscription

Pausing a subscription refuses the create requests listed below. It doesn't stop billing: the resources that already exist keep being billed. To stop charges, delete the resources.

You need the Owner or Billing Operator role, or a custom role with Manage access to Billing & Cost, granted on the subscription.

Open the billing account, as described in The billing account.

Select Pause, and confirm with Pause subscription.

While the subscription is paused, these requests are refused, and the API returns the message "This subscription is paused; no new resources can be provisioned until it is resumed.":

  • creating an instance;
  • creating a network or a router;
  • allocating a Floating IP, also for a network interface;
  • creating a volume;
  • creating a volume snapshot, and restoring a volume snapshot;
  • creating a backup plan, running a backup plan, and restoring a volume from a recovery point;
  • accepting a volume transfer.

You can still view and delete resources. To resume, open the billing account, select Resume, and confirm with Resume subscription.

When a project moves

You can move a project to another subscription in the same currency and region. For the conditions and the steps, see Move a project to another subscription.

For billing, the move takes effect at an hour boundary. The hour in which you move the project is billed in full to the current subscription; from the next full hour on, the project's usage is billed to the target subscription. The project's past usage and invoices stay with the current subscription, and so do its commitments, credits, and price agreements. The project's quota allocation is released, and the project receives a new allocation from the target subscription. See Quotas.
