Upload, download, and delete objects

Browse a bucket by folder, upload files from your browser, download objects with signed links, refresh the listing, and delete objects or a whole bucket.

Use a bucket's Objects tab to browse, upload, download, and delete objects. Uploads and downloads go directly between your browser and the object store.

Before you begin

  • To upload or delete, you need the Owner or Contributor role, or a custom role with Manage access to Block & Object Storage, on the subscription or on the project. Any role with Read access to Block & Object Storage lets you browse, refresh the listing, and download.
  • The bucket must have finished being created. While a bucket is being created or deleted, object actions are refused.

Open a bucket's objects

In the console, go to StorageObject Storage.

Select the bucket's name.

Select the Objects tab.

The header above the tabs shows the bucket's object count and total size.

Browse folders

Folders are derived from object keys: every key prefix that ends in a slash is a folder. For example, the objects reports/2026/q3.csv and reports/2026/q4.csv appear in the folder 2026, inside the folder reports.

  • Select a folder to open it. Its row shows Folder and the total size of the objects under it.
  • The path above the list starts with the bucket's name. Select any part of it to go back up.
  • The open folder is kept in the page address, so a reload, a shared link, or the browser's back button returns to the same folder.
  • To find an object anywhere in the bucket, type part of its key in Filter by key…. The search covers every object in the listing, in all folders, and shows full keys.

The console can't create folders: an upload goes into the folder that's open. A new folder appears when objects with a new prefix are added another way, for example through the Swift API.

Upload files

Open the folder that you want to upload into, or stay at the top level of the bucket.

Select Upload, and choose one or more files. You can also drag files onto the tab.

Follow the progress of each file under Uploads. When all the files show Uploaded, select Clear finished to clear the list.

  • Each file's key is the open folder's path followed by the file name.
  • Up to 3 files transfer at the same time. The others show Waiting until their turn.
  • Each file is sent in one request, through its own signed link. The console requests the link when the file's turn comes; the link is valid for 15 minutes.
  • The object's content type is the type that your browser reports for the file, or application/octet-stream when it reports none.
  • When the last transfer finishes, the console refreshes the object listing once.

If a file fails, its row shows the reason. Upload the file again; every attempt gets a new signed link.

Download an object

On the object's row, select Download.

The console requests a signed download link, valid for 15 minutes, and your browser downloads the object directly from the object store. You can download only objects that are in the console's listing. If an object was added outside the console, refresh the listing first.

Refresh the listing

The console lists the objects that it last read from the object store. Uploads and deletes that you make in the console update the listing. Objects added or deleted another way, for example through the OpenStack Swift API, appear after a refresh.

At the top of the bucket's page, select Refresh.

The refresh reads every object in the bucket, and the console reports how many it found.

Delete objects

To delete one object, select Delete on its row.

To delete several objects, select their check boxes, or select the check box in the header to select every file in the view, and then select Delete selected (N).

Confirm with Delete permanently.

  • A delete is permanent. Objects can't be recovered from the console afterward.
  • You can delete up to 1,000 objects at once.
  • Only the files shown in the current folder, or in the current search results, are deleted, even if you selected files elsewhere before.
  • Folders can't be selected. To remove a folder, delete the objects in it. Some tools also create a marker object for a folder, a key that ends in a slash. Such a folder stays visible when it's empty, and the console can't delete the marker.
  • Before deleting anything, the platform checks every selected key against the listing. If one of them is no longer in it, nothing is deleted.

Delete a bucket

Deleting a bucket deletes every object in it. You can't undo it.

Go to StorageObject Storage.

On the bucket's row, open the Row actions menu, and select Delete.

Type the bucket's name to confirm, and select Delete.

The platform empties the bucket in the object store, and then deletes it. The bucket disappears from the list when the delete completes, and billing for its stored data ends then. A bucket that's still being created can't be deleted; wait until its creation finishes.
