Resize a virtual machine
Change a virtual machine's size to get more or fewer vCPUs and more or less memory, compare the prices first, and plan for the restart.
Resizing changes an instance's size, and with it the instance's vCPUs, memory, and compute price. A running instance restarts to change size and can't be reached while it does.
Before you begin
- You need the Owner or Contributor role, or a custom role with Manage access to Compute / Instances, on the subscription or on the project.
- Plan for an outage: a running instance restarts during the resize and can't be reached until the resize finishes.
- No start, stop, restart, pause, resume, or other resize can be running on the instance. While one is, the size table is locked.
- Resizing doesn't change the disks. The OS disk and the data disks keep their size; to grow one, see Extend a volume.
Resize an instance
In the console, go to ComputeInstances, and select the instance.
Select the Size tab. You can also open it from the More actions menu with Resize.
In the size table, select the new size. The instance's current size is marked Current.
Check the Size change comparison of the current and the new size.
Select Resize, and then select Resize again in the confirmation.
The size table is the same as in the creation wizard, with the same search, filters, and live availability check. Sizes that the region can't place right now are disabled. For details, see Sizes and series.
The comparison shows the vCPUs, RAM, local disk, hourly price, and monthly price of both sizes, and the difference. Below it, the console shows how the change affects your subscription's monthly estimate.
Result
The instance's status changes to Resizing and then to Verify resize. The platform confirms the new size automatically; you don't need to confirm anything. The page refreshes by itself until the resize finishes, and the Size tab shows the new size.
From the moment the resize completes, compute is billed at the new size's rate. See Power states and billing.
Troubleshooting
| Message or symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| Another action is running on this VM. Resizing is available again once it finishes. | Wait until the other action finishes, and try again. |
| A resize is in progress. The size can be changed again once it finishes. | Wait until the current resize finishes. |
| Another action is already in progress on this resource. Wait for it to finish, then try again. | Another start, stop, restart, pause, resume, or resize is running on the instance. Wait for it to finish. |
| The status changes to Error | The resize failed. Check the failed operation on the instance's Activity tab. |
