Assign volumes to a plan
Add volumes to a backup plan when you create it or later, select them by tag, and remove them from the plan when they no longer need backups.
A backup plan backs up the volumes that are assigned to it. Assign volumes when you create the plan or later, and remove them when they no longer need backups.
Before you begin
- You need the Owner or Contributor role, or a custom role with Manage access to Block & Object Storage, on the subscription or on the project.
- A volume can belong to only one plan, and assignment is all-or-nothing: if one volume is refused, none are assigned. Volumes that are already in another plan aren't offered.
- You can assign only volumes of the plan's project.
Assign volumes to an existing plan
In the console, go to StorageBackup Center, and select the plan.
Select the Volumes tab.
Select Assign volumes.
Select the volumes' check boxes, or use Select by tag.
Select Assign.
The volumes appear in the plan's list of protected volumes. Their protection shows Never run until a run backs them up. To back them up now instead of at the next scheduled time, run the plan. See Run a plan now.
Assigning a volume that's already in this plan changes nothing.
Select volumes by tag
Select by tag lists the tags of the volumes that you can select, with the number of volumes that carry each tag. It appears only when at least one of those volumes has a tag. Selecting a tag adds its volumes to your selection.
Adds the volumes carrying the tag to the selection now. The plan stores the volumes, not the tag — a volume tagged later does not join on its own.Start from a volume
- On a volume's page, select Back up. The form for a new backup plan opens with the volume selected, when the volume isn't in a plan yet.
- In Backup Center, on the Protection coverage tab, the row action Create backup plan does the same for an unprotected volume. See Find unprotected volumes.
Both create a new plan. To add a volume to a plan that already exists, use the plan's Volumes tab.
Remove a volume from a plan
On the plan's page, select the Volumes tab.
On the volume's row, select Remove from plan.
Read the confirmation, and select Remove from plan.
When you remove a volume from a plan:
- Future runs stop backing it up, and it can join another plan.
- Its recovery points are kept, and billed, until each one's retention window ends.
- The plan's page no longer lists the volume or its recovery points. To restore from them, use the REST API. See Restore through the API.
When a volume is deleted
A deleted volume leaves its plan automatically, and the plan's page no longer lists it. Its recovery points are kept until each one's retention window ends, and you can restore them into a new volume through the REST API. The plan's run results show the volume's ID. See Restore through the API.
